The 3 – Minute Interview
John ‘Unique King’ Ayala
Ayala leads the D.C. chapter of the Guardian Angles – citizen volunteers who patrol neighborhoods and public transportation serving as positive role models and discouraging dangerous behavior. We caught him on the job at L’Enfant Plaza, and the New York city native shared with us his motivation for the work he has done for the past 27 years.
How’d you get your start as an Angel?
I started at 15 years old. I got interested when I learned they taught martial arts, and that they were out in the community helping people. I had wanted to be a cop when I grew older, and I saw this as a way to protect people, and to make a difference. I’ve been doing it in D. C for the past 22 years.
Why do you stick with it?
For me, it’s helping the kids. the more young people that join the Guardian Angels, the more rewarding it is for me. that’s one more young person not out there joining the gangs, or getting in trouble, but instead doing positive things out in their community.
Kids can be pretty tricky, and their attitudes aren’t always sparkling. How do you deal with them when they’re not on their beat behavior?
A lot of time they look at us like we’re the police, so a lot of the time there are no tricks. they give us respect because of the uniform.
What do you perceive as the biggest need among youth in this city?
When young people get in trouble, they do what they do because they don’t have anything else to do. they don’t know how to get involved in stuff, oftentimes, because there’s nothing for them to get involved in. That’s why we want to get them to join us – to give them a better opportunity.

DREAM A LITTLE DREAM

To dream a dream that I have dreamed, is to dream of the impossible, in this planet of debauchery.

To watch television without depreciating the human mind, is obsolete.

To listen to music with decadent or blasphemous words is to be open- minded

To go to a public school without soda, candy, and condoms, is impractical.

To be in a society where the essentials for the language include

“CHINK, KIKE, NIGGER, HONEKY, SPIC,GUIDO,” IS OUTLANDISH.

For me the knowledge of these things, portrays what society can instill in ones mind.

To have not love within, is to remain forever love without.

Attain an impossible dream is this, is only plausible in the Land of Paradise.

A  Poem ~  Michael’s Morning Madness (To my Mom)

I was a good boy with dark eyes of joy, hope and life. I crawled, took steps, was loved and adored. I was a growing boy with many kin and friends. I looked toward those of my family, and follow in some of their ways. My body yearn to please, and fill the wishes of my friends, and family, my hope and dreams lead me to follow some roads that were not what my mama would want, but still, she loves me.

I was young, wild, doing and making ends with those around me, working the dark side of streets. Those who moan me , some my blood and crew who mode my street life, helped me to my final place. Too many late nights with the wrong motives, wrong moves, wrong crowd, being the tool to use. But still I had my life ahead, to change, to make my peoples proud, so I thought, I had my smile and my street look, few knew the real me, not even you.

I was young on my last night, when my blood left my body, it cried out in passing through my veins, before it did in life. One early morning, I spent blood on my  hands, that never washed off, with some who where near my fate. I never thought, I would feel that lifelessly behind my eyes, but in my last, his fate drew near. I have little of worth to fill your hearts, minds or pockets, but I know now of something that I can leave you, to carry you through this time. Know first, there is God, and know, what I know now, Murder is wrong, on any Hands.              2/2001
